This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year I've had great success transforming my room into a "thinking classroom" by creating vertical whiteboard stations where students can work in cool spaces in small groups as they tackle higher thinking challenges. (Shout out to Peter Liljedahl... I highly recommend his book!) At times though we need to work at our desks. So many of my 9th graders think they can't "do" math and those feelings can instantly turn into stress.
Bouncybands give students the opportunity to quietly channel their nervous energy without disrupting their own thinking or the learning environment in the room.
Studies show that when people engage more of their senses in experience, they remember it better. The "Wiggle While You Work" study by Clemson University proved that while using a Bouncyband, the average child was able to focus 10% more because the whole body is engaged, so more of the senses are. In my search for ways to help my students channel their feelings in healthy, productive ways I came across elastic bands meant for students to bounce their feet while they work. My students loved them! Unfortunately, almost all of them have snapped over the last year because they were a lower quality version of the real Bouncybands. There is one band left in my room and in every class I have students negotiating with each other over who gets to sit at they "bouncy band desk." This has inspired me to do my best to provide every student in my room with their own, real Bouncyband. Know that in helping fund this project you'll be putting the biggest smile on very deserving 9th grade faces!
