My Students
I work at a culturally diverse school in downtown Buffalo in which I teach math to students on the Autism Spectrum. My students have a range in behavior, from sitting perfectly still, Tourette's syndrome, touching and exploring the classroom, to lying on the floor rolling around.
My students come from broken homes, single family homes, and non-parent homes.
Each has their own unique story and I'm lucky enough to be apart of it and I hope the donors could too.
My Project
Of the twelve desks in my room, eleven standard and one wide, three standard desks have the privilege of owning Bouncy Bands foot widgets. They were a gift from another educator and have proven to be effective for my students with Autism.
Bouncy Bands help minimize noise and distractions of students that express their anxiety by fidgeting their legs while sitting.
It's known that not all distractions will cease, but eliminating one distraction will go a long way in keeping students on task and having an effective lesson. Students also earn a nice workout and enjoy they're moving without knowing.
