My Students
As a teacher in an impoverished, special education school, my students experience challenges both in and outside of the classroom. With this, it is my goal to provide enriching experiences that help to ease their days and that foster life-long learning.
My students have difficulty self-regulating and interacting with peers.
My school serves students with a variety of special needs, including Autism, Down Syndrome, and Intellectual Disabilities within small and restrictive learning environments. My students are bright and enthusiastic, but require additional supports such as sensory integration and communication devices, which aid in stimulating their senses and allowing our students, who are mostly non-verbal, to communicate their wants and needs.
We are a small and supportive elementary site with a low budget that wants the best for our students. If we can meet their needs, then we are confident that they will reach their greatest potentials.
My Project
Since my students have difficulty self- regulating and interacting with peers, a bounce house would provide a space for students to receive sensory input while developing social interactions. Additionally, the use of a bounce house could facilitate language due to the opportunity for turn taking. Jumping in a bounce house will improve my students' use of their large muscles (ie. legs and core muscles) which will aid in their ability to independently navigate school and community environments. In addition, the improved core strength will aid in speech production as abdominal muscles are an integral muscle group in one's ability to produce words.
