This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in the largest city in Ct and two-thirds are below the poverty level facing many challenges. To encourage school attendance we have an open gym in the mornings, an extension of our PE Classes. The gym is filled with students before the bell rings excited to engage in the activity of their choice. It is a safe place to congregate before school starts. Playing basketball, volleyball and badminton are very popular. The courts are filled with laughter and it warms the heart to see them happy before their school day begins.

My Project

School attendance is a problem in the intercity and having open gym before school, serves as a way to encourage students to get to school. Providing a safe space and participating in a physical activity seems to get their day off to a positive start. With the budget cuts experienced throughout the district, all PE funding has been cut. We need basketballs, soccer balls and badminton equipment to accommodate the early morning activities. Our students want to play but due to a lack of equipment stand along the wall waiting their turn to get on the court. With the funding of the project, the additional and much-needed equipment will get more students off the wall and on to the court. Bouncing to success.
