Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In our diverse inner-city school, our students bring energy, creativity, and a love for learning.
However, many of them face challenges accessing engaging books that reflect their experiences and interests.
To encourage both literacy and mentorship, we are starting Book Buddies, where our sixth-graders will read The Crossover with their second-grade partners, building connections through shared storytelling and discussion.
We need a classroom set of The Crossover by Kwame Alexander to launch a powerful peer-reading program that pairs sixth graders with my second-grade bilingual students. Through this collaboration, older students will develop leadership and reading fluency while younger students gain confidence and literacy skills. The novel’s fast-paced verse, relatable themes, and engaging basketball narrative will hook students of all levels, making reading exciting and accessible.
With your support, we can create a literacy-rich environment where students not only improve their reading skills but also build meaningful relationships, promoting a school culture of mentorship and a love for books.
This project will help students:
-Strengthen reading comprehension
through peer discussions.
-Develop leadership skills as sixth graders guide younger readers.
-Encourage friendships across grade levels, creating a supportive school community.
