This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In February, in collaboration with the gym teacher we would like to integrate physical fitness instruction with a social emotional focus on the contributions of iconic Black athletes to the sport of basketball during Black History Month. By combining physical activity with lessons about historical figures like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and other influential Black athletes, we aim to teach students the importance of fitness, teamwork, and perseverance while honoring the legacies of these trailblazers. The basketball equipment will enable students to actively participate in the sport while learning valuable lessons about working together, taking turns, and athleticism.

Basketball provides an accessible and engaging way for students with autism to build motor skills, enhance coordination, and foster social skills through team sports.

Learning to shoot hoops and pass the ball encourages physical fitness and teamwork, while also offering a platform to introduce the stories of Black athletes who broke barriers and inspired generations. Through hands-on activities, students will not only gain confidence in their physical abilities but also engage in contributing to a team—values that are central to both the sport and the legacies of these legendary athletes. The adjustable basketball hoops and color coded basketballs will create an inclusive environment where students with autism can learn both the importance of physical fitness with the build in adaptations needed for their success.
