My kindergarteners will begin their learning adventure on the outskirts of a large, urban district. Our school is a Title 1 school with approximately 850 students in grades PreK-5. The student body is a diverse group of learners, representing over 38 nations. We have 65 percent minority students and a 50 percent Free and Reduced Lunch population. Within this diversity is strength and determination, as our school continues to close the achievement gap while growing confident and successful learners.
Kindergarten sets the foundation for a lifetime of inquiry and a love for learning!
These little scholars are at an age when everything is still new and exciting and their quest to know "how?" and "why?" makes each day a joy to experience. I strive to provide them with experiences that will not only ignite a passion to wonder and question, but will also give them the skills to find the answers they seek.
My Project
Kindergarteners are naturally full of energy and their first experience in school often forces them to stifle that energy, which can cause both physical, behavioral, and learning problems. My most energetic and antsy students have expressed a need to 'move' in order to regain focus. By allowing my students to release pent up energy at designated times, as well as when needed, they are more focused on learning.
Many academic skills in the early years are developed on a foundation of good physical health, muscle control, and coordination.
By providing my students with a variety of movement options, they will strengthen both their muscles and their minds. My students chose the mini trampoline because it is naturally motivating, fun, and allows students who need to burn off energy the chance to do so. It is also fun to include on a regular basis for all students in a variety of learning situations ... children can take turns bouncing while the class counts, says the alphabet to a certain letter, count syllables, etc. They're really excited about this!
Some of my other students have decided they might want to try yoga as a way to stay focused in class. The yoga videos will provide a whole class opportunity to build strength, flexibility, and coordination in an entertaining way. The cushions and movement task cards are additional options for bringing movement and physical health into my kindergarten classroom. Most of my students spend their time at home sitting in front of televisions or other electronic media, and get far less physical play and exercise than they need. If I can bridge the fitness gap within my classroom, my students will benefit in every area of their lives.
