My Students

We are a small rural school full of curious, energetic kids. We like to work with our hands to build and discover. We need to be empowered with 21st century skills that we will use throughout our lives.

My students come from a rural area in Southwest Virginia.

Lack of funding causes us to be less exposed to 21st century learning than our more urban neighbors. Our students come from a variety of economic backgrounds with more than half receiving free lunch and backpack food for the weekends. Many live in single parent homes or are being raised by grandparents.

My Project

There are certain basic skills that need regular practice in the elementary setting. Phonics, phonemic awareness and basic math facts are just a few skills that need repetition and daily work. Using robots to practice these skills increases interest and rigor for students. Not only will students practice these necessary skills, but they will also be learning programming and computer science as it is integrated into the experience.

By donating to our project for robots, you will not only help to improve motivation and rigor, but you will also ultimately help to increase students' academic achievement.

Here’s an example of how these robots will help. Students will draw a domino out of a bucket. Students will solve the problem by adding the numbers represented on the domino. Students will then program the robots to drive to the answer on a grid.

Working in collaborative groups will provide the opportunity to practice 21st century essential skills of communication, collaboration, citizenship, critical thinking, and creativity. Integration of academics with technology will increase their achievement as well as their desire to learn, use and apply technology.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
