I teach 120 students that range from 1st – 5th grade at two different schools. One school is located in a rural area, while the other school is located next to a Military Base. My students have been identified as advanced learners and they represent a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds. They come to class with a tremendous amount of curiosity and an excitement for learning, especially when they are actively engaged in learning activities.
My students thrive as they collaborate in small groups with brain stretching activities and project based learning.
I strive to provide a classroom environment where students feel safe to take chances and learn from their mistakes - try and try again! We continually focus on the importance of a growth mindset so that they never give up, even when things get challenging.
My Project
Botley the Coding Robot will challenge my young advanced learning students as they will be able to code the robot for up to 120 steps, while looping and programming the robot to go around objects. Botley will foster computational thinking skills and creative problem solving, while promoting physical and social development among my younger students.
I am requesting the Botley Coding Robot to help provide students the opportunity to work with their peers to code, solve problems, and design while exploring and engaging in the critical thinking process.
Coding will help foster creativity and allow students to visualize abstract concepts. Coding will encourage my students to become confident problem solvers. Coding is another language and language teaches students how to communicate and think logically. Most importantly, Botley will bring an excitement for STEM learning in my classroom!
