My Project
Reading memoirs like Born a Crime by Trevor Noah offers students a unique opportunity to engage with personal stories that reflect broader historical, social, and cultural issues. Memoirs are a powerful tool for fostering empathy and understanding, as they allow students to connect with real-life experiences and perspectives that may be different from their own. In Born a Crime, Noah's experiences growing up in apartheid-era South Africa provide valuable insights into racial inequality, identity, and the impact of systemic oppression. By reading such a memoir, students are not only exposed to the complexities of social justice and history but also encouraged to reflect on their own lives and the world around them.
After reading Born a Crime, my goal for students is to develop a deeper awareness of the ways in which personal and societal histories are intertwined.
I hope students will better understand the importance of resilience in the face of adversity, gain insight into how humor can be used to cope with difficult situations, and recognize the power of storytelling in shaping our perceptions of the world. Furthermore, I aim to inspire students to think critically about issues of race, identity, and resilience- encouraging them to draw connections between Noah's experiences and contemporary social issues. Thus, showing we are more than our circumstances. Ultimately, students will leave the experience with a heightened sense of empathy, social consciousness, and an appreciation for the diverse narratives that make up the human experience.
