I teach high school biology to students in the San Francisco Bay area. My students are surrounded by innovative science and technology companies, and my goal is to prepare them for their world outside of our classroom.
My students are aspiring scientists, innovators, and creative thinkers.
To prepare them for the future, I want to transform our classroom from a traditional desk in rows, lecture settings, to something that matches the laboratories and companies around us. I want students to explore, communicate, collaborate, and have hands-on lab experiences that open their eyes to the world around them and inspire them to help make our world a better place.
My students are eager to learn, and I want them to feel empowered and inspired in our classroom.
My Project
Teaching food webs can be a boring task.... typically students draw out a food web without really knowing the relationships of the species or even if they live in the same habitat or biome. I want to make learning about biomes, ecosystems, biotic and abiotic factors, and food webs fun and engaging for my students.
The Ecologies Card Game will allow students to think they are just having a lot of fun, but they will actually be learning about specific and real relationships between organisms in real biomes.
This card game will allow each of my teams of students to play the game in class in groups of four. After playing the game, students will complete a reflection task to discuss and summarize their learning. The game can be used as a great review game before final exams, to help students de-stress while polishing their skills and knowledge of the content, or as a fun refresher on minimum days or before a holiday, when student's brains are already on vacation.
