My students need 12 good book sets that they can use in a book club setting. They need books that are interesting and have substance such as "Zack's Lie" and "Waiting for Normal". These books will help to start them off.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you fell down the rabbit hole with Alice or what it was like to "Follow the Yellow Brick Road" with Dorothy and friends? Many of my fondest memories are from books I have read. My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations.
I am a 6th grade teacher in an inner-city school in Connecticut.
The school I work in is a title one school where 100% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many of the students come from low income families. More then 95% of my students are minorities. A majority of the students are English Language Learners (ELLs). And yet despite these issues like any kid my students love the books we read. The problem is they cannot get enough books into their hands. Like many high poverty inner-city neighborhoods where the students are primarily Latino and African-American we do not have access to the amount of quality young adult literature that students want to read and putting those books into their hands is a problem that can be overcome.
My Project
One way that we grow as readers is in sharing our experience of a story, which is why every week students meet in small groups to discuss novels. In discussions, they are excited to share what they have learned in that day's reading, and it is always a joy to see the "ah-ha!" moments when another student shares something she/he discovered in the text. They meet regularly in a "book club" discussion setting to go over questions and sometimes re-read exciting or interesting passages. It is incredible to watch them grow as readers and thinkers. These books will give them more choices of good literature to read and discuss. Through literature circle discussions, my students will not only learn how to share ideas about books, they will also be learning important social skills such as listening, paraphrasing, responding, agreeing/disagreeing, using evidence to support opinions, and more. They will be more interesting, well-read people who will carry that love of reading into adulthood.
Today's reader may be tomorrow's leader.
Help me to give these students' books that they will take with them wherever they go. Your donations will provide kids with interesting and challenging books. There is nothing more important than having kids reading. Our low-income and minority children are not reading as much or at the same level as more affluent kids. It is imperative that we provide ample opportunities for students to experience the wonder of reading.
