I am currently the reigning SAT "Czar" for Wade Hampton High School in Greenville, SC, which is a self-imposed title given to enunciate the amount of time I spend haranguing students to prepare themselves for the rigors of this test. We are a public high school that pulls from both the wealthiest and poorest communities in a city of 379,000 residents. The student body is comprised of 67% white, 26% black, 4.1% Hispanic/Latino, and 2.3% Asian students, with 15% of the student body receiving free or reduced lunch. Our average SAT score is slightly over 1000 for the last three years, which is frankly not high enough for the increasingly competitive requirements of Clemson University or South Carolina University. It is, however, typical of the national average. I look at what Larry Kreiger has done with Montgomery Township High School in New Jersey (he has taken them from being 36th in the state to 1st), and what he is now doing in Atlanta through Project Soar, and I realize that it is possible to move SAT scores up above the 1000 point ceiling. Through attending professional conferences, offering SAT tutorials after schools, and putting up a Word of the Day that students see upon entering classes, I've dedicated myself this year to helping students increase their scores - but I'd like to take it a step further. Specifically, I would like to offer The Princeton Review's Reading and Writing Workout for the New SAT for students who will regularly attend tutoring sessions in our library. These books have not only excellent pacing techniques and strategies, but they feature 300 of the most used vocabulary words from the last 10 years of the SAT on perforated card stock at the back of the book. I am now using these words (5 a week), copying them, laminating them and placing them in the bathroom sink area of the 16 student bathrooms. I feel that the average student who would and has attended my SAT workshops can not afford an SAT book and could really use these books both with me, and at home. My plan is to keep the book (with their name on it) until they have completed the series of workshops, and then allow them to take them home. I hope you will consider my proposal. I will be glad to forward pictures of them using the books! Thanking you in advance for your consideration,

Ms. Blanchard
