Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a barrier-free Title I funded school, home to over fifteen hundred students, with over seventy languages spoken. My children are resilient, dedicated, and determined to overcome any obstacles that they may need to overcome to soar to new heights. I am in awe of their perseverance and how they strive to be the best possible. To say that I am proud to be their teacher is truly an understatement.
Allowing our children to take on community service projects within our community will help them to take on even more leadership roles to prepare them to become our leaders of tomorrow.
My class is comprised of students that represent over 25 difficult cultures. My children from diverse backgrounds and cultures are already at a disadvantage within the educational system and this is impacted further as most of the families in our school community our not native English speakers. Most of our families have very little literacy schools.
Our students want to to bring a love of literacy to our school and surrounding community. Our students are working on building their own literacy skills with the intention of helping their siblings and their parents become more literate in English. They will be creating packets with wordlists, phonics activities, and sentence activities that will be taken from the books and they will work with other classes and families from our school community. They will use the read aloud books to practice their fluency and automaticity.
