Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a first grade teacher in a low-income, high-poverty school district in the South Bronx. My class is filled with vibrant, eager learners who require a variety of ways to learn. About seventy-five percent of my students are performing below grade level. Many of my students live in shelters, receive out-of-classroom services for speech, reading, and math, and are English language learners or have an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
My students face many challenges each day and deserve nothing short of the best to help them reach their full potential and beyond.
For many of them, I am the only comfort, security, and positive source in their life. I want to make my students feel welcomed, appreciated, loved, and know that they can do anything they put their minds to!
My Project
The hand2mind VersaTiles Literacy Class Set will help improve my students literacy skills and promote independence and ownership of their learning. Many of my students are struggling with literacy foundations (phonics and fluency, language conventions, vocabulary, comprehension skills, science informational text - comprehension skills) and understanding grade level concepts. They are tactile learners and need hands on resource to enhance their learning experiences. This literacy resource will be used for independent practice, small groups, rotations, centers, and one-on-one instruction. My students will be able to grasp all the necessary literacy concepts for first grade and meet state standards. This resource will also build their confidence in literacy and move them toward becoming excellent readers and writers.
