My Students
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds, with a population of 81.7% Minority Enrollment. We are a Title 1 school and is classified as Rural: Fringe
The percentage of students achieving proficiency in math is 34% (which is lower than the Hawaii state average of 42%). The percentage of students achieving proficiency in reading/language arts is 48% (which is lower than the Hawaii state average of 54%).
Because our students come from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds, and struggle with their language acquisition, there is an ever-growing academic gap.
Due to budgetary restraints, there has been no program for the last two years, so the students have not received any instruction nor given the opportunity to learn and practice fitness and other skills during the school day.
I service the entire middle school students, so this project would impact a large number of children. The children need exposure to various health and fitness concepts, practicing these, and the opportunity to use various equipment, which they can then incorporate into their lives outside of school.
Aerobic Steps
Resistance Bands
Students will be using the Aerobic Steps and Resistance Bands to learn and practice various cardiovascular fitness, strength training and endurance, and foundational fitness progressions. This equipment will provide the students the opportunity to gain cognitive knowledge, practice various strategies, participate in team building and cooperative activities, and have exposure to various activities they may otherwise not experience. It is important student learn there are many different ways to “exercise” and one does not need to run a mile!
Obtaining this equipment will allow me to teach my students, aligning all lessons to the National Physical Education Standards.
