This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds and have a myriad of needs. 98% of students qualify for free lunch and a lot live below the poverty line. Many have single parents that work multiple jobs, and my students either watch younger siblings or work after school to help pay the rent. Because of this, participating in private musical instruction or outside performance group has not been an option. However, they are very creative and eager to learn. They desire to participate in extracurricular performance opportunities any chance they get.
For the majority of my students, the first time they ever perform on stage is during their high school career.
But they are no stranger to music. They bring with them the different styles and sounds of their home countries, rich histories and cultures, languages, memories, passion, dedication and excitement.
Many have moved to this country with the hope of finding a new and better life filled with opportunity. My hope is to give every student the opportunity to succeed in music and performance whenever possible.
My Project
My school is now in its 4th year with a band class. Each year, students get to learn an instrument for the very first time. Every time I show my beginners an instrument demonstration video, I always have 1-2 students express an interest in the bassoon. Unfortunately, the bassoon is the only instrument that my school does not own. Whenever I have an opportunity to bring in a bassoon player for a demonstration, the kids get so excited. I've had kids spend extra time sitting with the bassoonist just for a chance to try out the instrument. Every collaboration that we have done with other bands, the first thing my students notice is the bassoon player.
My students would be so excited to add this instrument to our band.
The bassoon makes such a unique sound that cannot be duplicated by another instrument. While this instrument would only be played by one student, all members of the band would benefit from its addition. Students that play the lower range bass instruments such as tuba, trombone, euphonium, and bari sax would especially benefit from the addition of this instrument as it would be an additional low voice in the bass line.
I have approached my principal in the past about purchasing a bassoon for the band, but it is hard for him to justify spending this much money on a single student. He does not see the benefit that this instrument will have for all of those involved in the band. A bassoon is also a very specialized instrument that not many people play. Many colleges are looking for bassoon players for their bands and will offer scholarships to those that play well enough, regardless of their chosen major. Please help bring this opportunity to my students!
