Boost Literacy with Read Across America Week

Help me give my students books, a corkboard for their author spotlight, and other resources to lead a campus-wide literacy initiative and build a reading culture amongst the school community.

My Project

My students care deeply about books, even if they do not always see themselves as "readers." On our Title I high school campus in the South Bronx, many students have had limited access to books they actually want to read. Still, they show up to the library during lunch and after school to talk about the latest releases and help each other find something new. This year, my student library interns stepped up and decided to turn that energy into something meaningful.

My library interns are planning and hosting an entire week of literacy events for Read Across America Week as a way to give back to their school community and make reading feel welcoming.

This is designed to boost literacy across our campus and encourage students to explore books. Through Library Bingo, students will check off prompts on their reading habits, introduce friends to new titles, and discuss authors' writing styles. During a manga-themed UNO day, students will combine something they already love with book-based discussion prompts. They will also host author talks/information sessions on various books using the corkboard. The week will end with a Book Café where students can sample new reads in a relaxed setting and find books they may want to take home. They will also create author spotlight tables using the art prints, gold frames, chalkboard and gift popular books by famous female authors as it coincides with Women's History Month.

These community service events will be held during lunch and after school. The colored ink is to print brochures with literacy/reading statistics. The corkboard and dry erase packets are for their info session/author spotlights and will display the brochures. Students will play the vinyl at the hands-on tournament. These materials will allow my students to run this literacy initiative on campus.
