The majority of my students are second language learners from low socioeconomic homes.
Most of my students do not have computers, tablets or iPads. The very few that do, often do not have Internet. My students are eager to use technology and I want to provide for them opportunities while in school access to quality technology.
I teach at a Title I school where over 97% of our students are economically disadvantaged. Our school takes innovative and progressive approaches to take our students to performance levels that compete with students at high socioeconomic schools. One of these measures is providing opportunities to read.
Samsung Chromebooks are a simple and an affordable way to put the much needed technology into the hands of my students. Chromebooks have vast educational resources with a multitude of educational apps. My class will be able to integrate rich content specific lessons with the fast, reliable Chromebook. There is very little startup time or wait time so there will be more time on task.
With updated and high quality technology like these Chromebooks, I can provide my students with opportunities to make the best use of digital libraries they may not have access to otherwise.
The digital library my school has access to personalizes reading for students by recommending books based on their interests, reading level, and ratings of books they've read.
Because of the outdated technology we currently have in my classroom, more time is lost due to troubleshooting. Many of my students also do not have access to computers or the internet at home. Their only opportunity to access this material is at school. I want to be sure that the technology is well equipped to provide rich and meaningful experiences to continue learning.
