Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Kindergarten at Think College Now! This is a new, smaller, public school in Oakland, CA that strives to give every child an opportunity to attend college. We will be starting our fourth year as a school in August. To give my children the best possible education, I have been trying to take the existing curriculum mandated by the district and supplement them with lessons that add music and art, so that the children can get rich instruction that embodies a full experience. Previously, I had used poems and songs with hand-plays to engage the children. However, after attending a music seminar, I realized that Kindergartners can learn many Language Arts and Math skills by using musical instruments. Boom Whackers are a musical instrument that comes in eight octaves. The children bang them on their body or the ground to make the sound. These instruments are appropriate for Kindergartners because the students do not need to have fine motor control to make the music. By having these instruments in my classroom, the students would be able to actively learn about beats, rhythm, syllables, spelling, counting, and many more standards while making music. I am requesting 3 sets of Boom Whackers that would benefit both current and future students.
