This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My musicians know that when the teacher says, "Are you ready to rock?!" they respond, "Ready to roll!" Student musicians create and perform music in every single class.
My students are primarily from the Woodlawn neighborhood on Chicago's south side.
They are intelligent, inquisitive, and incredibly eager to play any instrument they can get their hands on. Students in our school recite our school pledge every morning and work all day to be the best students and global citizens they can be.
My Project
My students need boomwhackers with octave caps. My musicians will be able to create and perform harmonies, melodies, and accompaniments on the boomwhackers. Since each student will have only one pitch, they will collaborate to perform compositions, much like members of an orchestra performing a Beethoven symphony. These activities will develop sense of pitch, rhythm, and prepare students for guitar, band, or orchestral instruments.
Our classroom currently has a very limited number of instruments.
Most of the instruments are either geared toward middle school children or are not melodic. Boomwhackers would give my student musicians a hands-on musical experience.
