My Students

A typical day in my classroom is filled with instruments, singing and movement, with a little bit of rhythmic speech. But because of large class sizes, including 1 class that is combined, I can have 33 students at a time. So our need to expand our instrument numbers is great! We need your help!

My students are hungry to learn.

If I even mention the words "get ready for instrument time" they are immediately quiet because they know we are about to learn something fun because it involves instruments. Because of the large class sizes I have to be creative because a lot of times a student will have to share instruments. However, I have a special reward called music hero and if a student earns a music hero they get to go to an instrument first before everyone else. I can tell you that 100 percent of students go to the 3 big congas and small tubano that we have. I can't tell you what it would mean if I surprised them with a new large tubano drum. They absolutely love when we use the drums and of course I love it too. There's something about the sound of a drum that just gets to you and makes you forget about everything else. My students experience this same feeling when they perform on them.

My Project

My students need a large tubano drum. Currently we have 3 large congas and one small tubano. My students will use this drum daily. I have 3rd through 5th grade and they would all be using it daily. For my 5th graders especially when we do drum circles it would greatly enhance my students' learning. I like to use drums also for when I meet with special needs students. If we received another drum I could have each student on a drum individually instead of sharing or taking turns on the drums.

This project will make a difference because it would add to our repertoire of world percussion instruments.

It would change the need for sharing instruments which would help students to feel a sense of ownership of the instrument and individuality. The more drums I can have donations for, the more students will be able to participate on them at the same time instead of sharing them.
