The students were able to collectively donate over 3,000 items to the Burlington County Community Animal Shelter. Each day they would keep track of the items that we collected in our classroom. This project has created a sense of responsibility for them. They understand how to properly care for a pet and the expense that it takes to take on a new member of their family. Turns out many of them don't have pets! This was a great way to incorporate life skills within the classroom. This really helped them visualize and understand what the items were in their Project Based Learning aspect of the project. This helped them to understand what different treats are and the purposes for each item. \r\n\r\nThe kids were so excited to fill up my car for transport. They grew more and more excited as the items piled up. They were chanting Animal Shelter as I pulled away! This project has definitely inspired them to continue to give back to their community. \r\n\r\nWe intend to do this project again next year however, earlier in the year. We discussed with the students how we can make the project better. They said they wanted to do this for a zoo. We spoke about doing incorporating a Wildlife Refuge and then making a field trip for the students. It would be a wonderful opportunity for them to get to see where their donations are going and what an impact they are making. We will definitely be incorporating the project based learning side as it helps the students understand what it takes to run something like this not only financially but physically. Overall, this has been a wonderful opportunity that you have given to our Title 1 school.
