This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My wonderful students come from the neighborhood around the school and are a delight to teach. We are a Title 1 school, and the boys and girls represent a diverse population. I love my position as the school librarian and enjoy seeing the classes once per week. I have noticed that our students are becoming less active due to television and video games. Personally, I have become very active with yoga classes, swimming, aerobics and bicycling. This past year I decided my goal would be to find ways to combine my love of reading and exercising with my library students. I want them to share my passion about becoming our best both mentally and physically!
My Project
Our school has a beautiful library equipped with a SmartBoard, projector, document camera and enormous carpet. Last year, I purposely searched for great stories that would also get us moving and dancing and exercising. For example, we read Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, and then we practiced yoga poses of being "in a house, in a box, in a car, and in a boat." When we read The Croaky Pokey by Ethan Long, the students waved, stretched, bounced and wiggled. A super favorite story was Wink: The Ninja Who Wanted to Be Noticed by J. C. Phillipps. Everyone practiced the ninja positions, which greatly helped with balance and stability.
This year the students asked if we would continue our Bookworms Love to Move story time in the library.
They were very excited when I said YES! Several students mentioned stories they had read over the summer that would be good choices to share. The students also suggested using musical equipment to make the stories even more fun. What a super idea! As the librarian, I think the use of musical equipment such as dancing scarves, shakers, tambourines, bells, rhythm ribbons, and bean bags, would raise our Bookworms Love to Move program to an even higher level. However, our school budget allows for books only to be purchased, and does not allow for any additional items to be bought. Extra items must be purchased by me.
A donation to our program can continue a successful program of sharing books and exercise in a fun way. Your support will encourage and inspire our children to love reading and love their healthy bodies. Help our bookworms who love to read and move and exercise!
