My Students

At the core of who they are, my students are curious and kind. They look forward to losing their teeth, crossing the monkey bars at recess, and learning how to read. And that is exactly what their time in first grade should entail!

What I love most about my learners is they come from all different walks of life.

Our school is made up of students from different areas and bring a range of life experiences. Some may see this as a disadvantage to their education because they do not have a "typical" upbringing, but I see it as a blessing. Students learn how to accept each other for who they are and work well together as a team. Students establish a fun and engaging learning environment through their desire to learn. Most importantly, they take their unique experiences and create authentic learning out of them. The perseverance and dedication my students have toward their education is an inspiration to me every single day.

My Project

First grade is a time when students soar in their reading careers. They are discovering which types of books they enjoy, developing their reading skills and finding a love for reading.

Reading takes on many purposes in my classroom.

We read to learn new information, critically think and challenge ourselves. The non-fiction books in my project will do just that. These non-fiction books are filled with beautiful pictures and interesting topics that will keep my students engaged during reading workshop. The leveled non-fiction texts are on first grade reading level which allows them to practice skills they learn during the year.

The Scholastic New Magazines will be used in my classroom in many ways. These weekly magazines are authentic text that are great for shared reading and strategy lessons. The magazines have non-fiction topics that are up to date which make learning more meaningful. Students will also take their magazines home each week to foster more learning at home.

Receiving these materials will boost my students reading skills all the while providing them with rich and engaging books. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
