I am a special needs teachers in a low income, inner-city school district. My classroom consists of 12 amazing middle school-aged students, all diagnosed with a moderate disability, such as Autism, Intellectual disabilities, and Neurological disabilities. Their eagerness, and enthusiasm towards learning is not only contagious but inspiring as well, as despite the difficulties they endure on a daily basis, they still come to school, every day, ready and excited to learn. My students inspire and motivate me, not only to be a better teacher, but to become a better person as well.
My Project
Our classroom consists of 12 amazing middle school-aged students, all diagnosed with a moderate disability, such as Autism, Intellectual disabilities, and Neurological disabilities. At the end of the day, every day, to help strengthen our comprehension skills and abilities, we read a high interest story together. Sometimes, we will even invite students or teachers from other classrooms to be our “guest reader” of the day, to also help strengthen our social skills. Unfortunately, we are lacking the appropriate material to continue this daily activity for the remainder of the school year. In order to continue this activity that my students enjoy so much, we are asking for a class set of the high- interest novel, “Finding Someplace” by Denise Lewis Patrick, a novel based on a young girl’s experience surviving Hurricane Katrina. We are also hoping for a class set of “Double Identity”, by Margaret Peterson Haddix, a novel about a young girl who was forced into a secret life after her parents send her to live with her aunt.
