Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." - Ralph Waldo Emerson. I choose to blaze a new path: one where my students will thrive.
My students attend a wonderfully diverse community school.
We have a large special needs population, many English as a Second Language learners, and a majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price school lunch, indicating an economic disadvantage. Despite all of the challenges facing my school and students, we have improved test scores greatly in the past few years. We have been recognized by the state of Louisiana as a "Top Gains" school and have earned a grade of A three of the past four years on our school report card.
My Project
There is much research supporting the value of the practice of self-selected reading during school hours, and I have seen the benefits firsthand. By providing books that kids enjoy, I firmly believe they will begin to enjoy reading.
While our book selection has grown, our shelf space has not.
I have provided the best shelving I can, but they are all temporary solutions (think plastic crates, plastic shelves, and thin metal slatted shelves). The books are crammed, creating an unappealing display from which students to choose the perfect book. One of the shelves has a back that has fallen off! I worry that my students will not feel the benefits of the bountiful book collection without this new bookshelf. Please help my readers easily find what they want to read with a donation to this project.
