This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet met Vladimir Tod. My students are reluctant readers, and this book is high interest - and a lot of fun.

My students are reluctant readers and I think they would get lost into the world of an 8th grade vampire.

The students all live in a very urban environment, and a majority of them are classified as under-privileged. The students read below grade level.

My Project

While the school where I work has a plethora of technology, no one ever fell in love with reading through a computer screen. I am asking for books for each student to carry around with them. We will read in class and at home. I am also hoping some of them will read on public transportation because they can't put the book down.

I LOVE reading - and I hope to share my passion with my students.

I know that my passion is contagious, but not if I am lacking materials. To quote Emily Dickinson, "There is no frigate like a book" - which means that books are the cheapest, easiest transport to other lands and perspectives.
