This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
"There is a meager amount of books in this school," retorted T.C to my plea for a vocabulary word in a sentence. I teach seventh grade Language Arts in a high-poverty school. My students struggle with adult problems everyday.
My students felt the luck and fortune that many kids feel when they receive an unexpected gift when they first saw the LCD projector generous donors supplied them. However, despite the obstacles they face at home, my students are beginning to see that they can take advantage of any learning opportunity that is presented to them in school. If my students had books that interested them in the classroom, they could begin acing tests as reading levels increase.
I have selected a variety of books that I believe can kick-start my students' life-long love of reading. This project is not huge, but it is significant.
If my students receive these books, they will begin to escape the realities of the troubled city in which they live and enjoy the resources taken for granted in wealthier neighborhoods. With your help, my students will be able to cultivate a new love of learning and reading.
