Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a small, community-based Title I (low-income) school in East Oakland. The majority of our students are immigrant families from Guatemala, Yemen, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, and the U.S. They are hungry to learn and deserving of everything that we can creatively muster to provide for them. We are working hard to create projects that foster their love of learning and empower them to use their creativity to expand their world.

COVID-19 has them learning from home in a zip code with the highest rate of infection in the county, and with new stress and responsibilities as they help hold together households with family members who have lost employment or been directly affected by COVID-19.

My Project

Representation matters, and it's important that all students have access to challenging and entertaining books that feature a variety of Black characters.

These books were selected to showcase the diverse stories of Black protagonists in a range of settings and genres.

They include non-fiction biography, in the form of the story of Claudette Colvin, a 15-year old girl who nine months before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat and move to the back of the bus for a white person. They include historical fiction, like "The Watsons Go to Birmingham," a book that is primarily a family story set against the backdrop of Flint, Michigan and Birmingham, Alabama in 1963; "Chains," the story of a 13-year-old girl who, on the verge of being released from slavery, must fight for her and her sister's freedom during the Revolutionary war; and "Ninth Ward," the story of a young girl in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. They also include books of poems -- "Locomotion," and "Home of the Brave" -- telling the stories of a boy adjusting to foster care and the loss of his parents, and of a Sudanese refugee struggling to adjust to life in America, respectively. "Brown Girl Dreaming" is both a memoir and a book in free verse through which Jacqueline Woodson tells her stories of growing up Black in South Carolina and New York in the 1960s and 70s. Finally, they also include works of fantasy -- "The Children of Blood and Bone" and current, realistic fiction -- "Harbor Me," "The Crossover," and "Ghost."

I spend a lot of time reviewing potential reading for my class, and I feel confident that this selection of critically-claimed books will engage my students and expand their worlds.
