My Students

"We are small, but that doesn't mean we can't make a difference." This is something I tell my students often! Coming from a rural, coastal town that has suffered many economic set-backs, my students have learned to get by with very little. However, school feels like a place where "very little" should never be good enough. Unfortunately, due to a shrinking population, our district budget continues to suffer. This translates to having less and trying to keep up in an ever-changing world.

Most of my students are coming to school with few supplies and even fewer resources with which to acquire them.

Their basic needs are often not met, so not only do they face a challenging day at school, but too often they do it hungry, tired and cold.

My Project

While this might seem like a strange combination of books, I choose these books for two reasons. First, my students are VERY into Harry Potter these days! Second, I am looking forward to doing a book study and project with my students on the book called, "Make Your Bed."

"Make Your Bed" is a current NY Times bestseller.

The learning objectives for this book project are: 1) Students will gain knowledge and perspective to become leaders through skills shared by a former Navy. 2) Students will create a personal code of conduct along with a leadership model. These are invaluable tools! We will save them to their Google Drive accounts to be reviewed twice a year. I am very excited to see the impact of this project on our students' long term goals!

These are some classic novels and ones that have seemed to reignite my student's interest in reading! Some book talks go over fairly well and others fall flat, but this time, Harry Potter seemed to come alive to my students as I read them an excerpt. All of a sudden, everyone was a new fan! Needless to say, they are flying off our shelves and students are waiting on others to finish!
