This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My kids...gosh, do I love them! They are such a special group of children who have faced so many different obstacles at the young age of 11 or 12. My students live in a community in Baltimore where 99% of them qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and about 1/3 of them are English language learners.
Even though they may have challenges to face outside of the classroom, they come into the classroom eager to learn.
They inspire me to work harder.
My Project
My students love to read. The minute I explain that they can read their independent reading books, the class becomes quiet and all of their noses are in a book. I often have to tell them to put their books aside when it's a teaching time! I'm requesting books like National Geographic Fun Facts and many graphic novels, including books about Minecraft. I'm also requesting books that will help empower the girls in my class, books such as Girls Think of Everything: Stories of Inventions by Women.
The new books in this project will help my students to grow into lifelong readers.
My students are often reading books that have been well loved, and even though they might be great stories, the kids just aren't as interested in them. I want my students to experience the smell and the excitement of new books!
