When looking in my classroom, you will see the smiling faces of students who feel safe and respected, and who are ready to take on rigorous academic risks within the community we have built. What you may not see is that the majority of students in my classroom live a life where they struggle with high poverty rates, food insecurity, and trauma.
My students have overcome more challenges in their lives than most can imagine, but are still thriving and ready to learn!
My Project
Many children struggle with skills such as regulating emotions, forming friendships, and having a positive growth mindset. These skills are needed for kids to be happy and to grow into successful adults. Just like the skills learned in math English and science, these social-emotional learning skills need to be taught/modeled in order for students to become successful at them. That is why my school places such an emphasis on developing these skills with our students in our daily morning meetings.
These books I am requesting will help support my existing social-emotional learning curriculum and engage students in learning these essential skills.
Even though I teach 5th grade and they are the "big kids" of the school, they still LOVE having stories read aloud to them. They also still have a lot to learn when it comes to social-emotional learning. These books will be integrated into my lessons and will provide an engaging way to teach a variety of skills and concepts.
I appreciate any contribution to this project as I can not do this on my own, but I know the impact it will have on my students will magnify learning for years to come!
