My Students
We are a school focused on student learning. We work to push students to reach their potential and find their passions both in and out of school. My students are our future, and it is my job to not only teach them to read and write, but also teach them basic life skills that will allow them to be successful in today’s world. We have high expectations for students’ academic performance and try to help them grow as individuals as well.
We do a lot of STEM activities and inquiry-based learning to engage our students and keep them motivated.
Our school is located in the middle of our neighborhood in Rochester, MN. Many of the teachers including myself live within the neighborhoods that our students live. Our students come from different backgrounds and our diversity makes us uniquely amazing. We have a range of socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, learning styles, and disabilities; these all play into the need for a diverse learning environment.
My Project
Guided reading time is my favorite part of the day and the best time to teach targeted reading skills. The only thing holding me back is access to multiple copies of quality books. It is so hard to teach students to love reading with online materials. The books that I have selected would allow me to teach students to love reading while holding books in their hands.
The books I am requesting are for first graders who are just starting to become proficient readers.
The books will allow me to deliver foundational skill instruction in small-groups. The books will enable me to provide differentiated, targeted, and efficient skills instruction at my students' instructional reading level.
Each set of books is leveled to be just right for the different reading levels. The series book collections are also used to help create a love for reading by getting my students hooked on a book series and challenging them to read each book from the series and begin to analyze the various books in each series. These "hook books" is what I use to hook my first graders into loving to read, which in turn helps them become more successful in future grades. My big goal is always to help foster a love for reading, and these books will help me to that!
