Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When my students come to school, they are coming not only to learn, but to receive the interaction and positive attention that isn't always available to them at home. We also learn how to be kind and patient. "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all" --Aristotle
The students in my classroom come from very humble backgrounds and are often English Language Learners.
The transition from first grade to second grade can be very scary for them, but Walter White Elementary is a school that supports every aspect of their learning process. In our classroom we learn how to be kind, grateful, patient; how to apologize and forgive. My students thrive on positive feedback and love reading books that have characters they can relate to. Of course they struggle with the rigorous curriculum, but every morning when I pick them up for a new school day--they are all eager and smiling!
My Project
Smiles can turn to tears very quickly in a classroom full of 2nd graders. Sometimes it is hard for them to be empathetic, forgiving, apologetic, kind, or patient. These skills need to be directly taught and modeled for them. These books will be a wonderful way for us to discuss social skills. They will come to understand that we will all be happier if we know how to be good citizens and friends!
Often in second grade lessons are interrupted because of conflicts between students during class.
This means that I have to stop the instruction and solve the conflict before learning can take place. If we had these wonderful social skills books, our class can have meaningful discussions about kindness, patience, and gratitude that will prevent so many problems. These books will help us be better citizens so we can focus on the important thing--getting smart!
