In our community, many students strive for academic success but struggle to connect meaningfully with the texts they are tasked to read in the English classroom. Many of these canonical novels students are asked to read do not reflect the current experience of a teen’s life. Students struggle to find meaning and relevance in these texts, beyond completing an assignment and earning an “A” in their English class. Many students do not read these canonical texts and look for information online to satisfy their workload.
At SRV, our English department hopes that, by encouraging students to choose texts of their choice, we can cultivate an appreciation and love of reading for our students.
In addition to canonical texts we read as a class, students choose “choice books” to read throughout the year. At the beginning of the school year, students reflect on genres and topics that they find exciting and research texts that fulfill their interests.
After surveying my students’ reading preferences, I found that even the most reluctant readers had a book genre or title they were interested in reading. My students have filled out a list of titles of books they want to read the most. As a new teacher at our school, I have a sparse, but spacious library. I hope to fill my library with books that captivate my advanced and more reluctant readers.
