When you walk into my classroom, you will find a diverse group of kids who have a lot of energy and excitement about life. They are curious and have many questions about everything that we do. They come from many different cultures and their experiences help to make our classroom a better place.
Although my school is in a high poverty area, the students have so much love and joy to offer.
They deserve the BEST education and teachers who care about and believe in them!
My Project
Learning how to read is important. Coming to school is important. But, how would you feel if you couldn't identify with what you were reading about? It is difficult to connect with someone who doesn't look or act like you. This is why equal representation of race, culture, gender, and ability is essential.
I want to build my classroom library by adding books like 'In the Footsteps of Crazy Horse', 'She Persisted' and 'When the Beat was Born.' These books are multicultural representations of who my students are and will give us an opportunity to learn about each other even more.
We can read them and talk about what they learned, the connections they made, and we can stretch ourselves to see from other perspectives.
Our hope is to read each of this books for read alouds, to go along with our morning meeting, and to teach reading strategies. I want to make them a part of our curriculum so that students can read them on their own but also discuss them with our class.
