Middle school can be tough. Socially, emotionally, and academically, there can be lots of challenges for students in the early teen years. My students are learning English and adapting to a new culture while navigating these difficult years, and this creates an extra layer of challenge.
My English language learner students are resilient, resourceful, and caring young teens.
Many of my students this year are recently arrived refugees from Africa and the Middle East. They tackle problems cheerfully and with gusto, but they also experience significant adjustment challenges. These students have been through a great deal beyond their control in their short lives, but they use multiple talents and strengths to overcome current obstacles.
My Project
Many of my students are learning to read for the first time in any language. Reading an entire book, even an easy chapter book like Tornado, Chalk Box Kid, or the Stepping Stones version of Dracula, is something most of my students have never done. I am requesting class sets of these three books for my students to read together in class and then take home to keep.
I'm hoping that these three easy chapter books will help my students cross the bridge from reading with audio support to beginning to read independently.
Although they are middle school students, they all began the year reading at a primer level. They are headed off to high school shortly with minimal reading skills; this is a true reading emergency. Your help will be much appreciated.
