This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in a fourth/fifth grade, self-contained, special education classroom in a high poverty neighborhood in the South Bronx.

The students have been classified learning disabled or speech impaired.

Many of the students are English Language Learners, and all are performing several years below grade level in all subject areas. While the students and the school face many of the challenges that seem to come with a high poverty neighborhood, the students are happy, motivated, and the school does a great job, under the circumstances of creating a safe, comfortable haven in the midst of periodic violence and chaos.

My Project

I am trying something new this year - I am doing a high-interest mystery unit to really turn my students onto reading. As part of this unit, it would be wonderful to provide each student with their own copy of our read-aloud book, "The Name of This Book Is Secret" by Pseudonymous Bosch, to be able to markup and dog ear - just as true readers do!

If this unit is successful, I would love to provide personal books to my students from one unit, each year to help them build their home libraries.

There is nothing better than reading a well-loved book at night cozy in bed and I would like to give this experience to my students! And having the new reading rug will be a cozy place in the classroom to read and get-to-know their books!
