Books to Make Up for What We Missed

My Students

I am so lucky to be my third graders' teacher! Third grade is such a pivotal year in students' lives and learning - we start our discovery of fractions and multiplication, and many students find that book that makes them fall in love with reading (one of my favorite things to see!). Their love for learning is insatiable and contagious - I love it!

My third graders come to me with a variety of experiences and abilities and backgrounds, both English-speaking and not.

Even so, this close-knit farm community in Michigan can really come together! For me, it's not so much a coming together as a coming home: I went to the school where I teach when I was in third and fourth grade. I so enjoy sharing my experiences with my little ones!

My Project

Coronavirus has hit us hard. As a country, we have shut down so many parts of our society, including our schools. At my school, we never got to say an official goodbye to our students before the closures began, and there are so many loose ends that never got tied up, including our read-aloud book.

I can't bring back this lost part of the school year for my students, but I can give them something to hold onto to remember our class.

By funding this project, you are helping me give a copy of our last official read-aloud into the hands of all of my students.

This book, Fairest of Them All, is one that had all of my students on the edge of their seats every single day. They couldn't wait for me to start reading, and at the end of our short read aloud time every day, they would always beg for me to read more to them. I want to try to deliver some of that magic to them as best as I can in this uncertain and upsetting time. It's not perfect by any means, but it's the best I can do, which is all we can ask of ourselves during our current crisis. Thank you in advance for your support!
