Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My kindergarten ELL students are very eager to learn English and want to fit in with the other native English students around them. I see them for one hour each day for ESL pull-out classes and they get additional time with me in the afternoon in their classrooms. At the beginning of the year many of my students are shy and are not comfortable with speaking. I have many students that only speak in the their native language and have no experience speaking English. Many have not attending preschool and have no previous school experience.

Despite their struggles they love listening to stories and by the end of the year they are reading short phonics stories.

Although, our school is a high poverty school, most of the students reach high achievement. The students know they are special and that I want them to be successful.

My Project

The books in this project cover topics through stories about sharing and learning through play, types of weather, and trees. These books are targets because these are the topics that the students will learn about this upcoming school year. These will be a great resource to make learning in our classroom fun and engaging. Books are the way to hook all students.

It is so important for children to be surrounded by and be read to from quality books.

Literacy is all about a love of stories. With these books, I can introduce so many different concepts. This is one way to make a big difference in reaching students through printed words and imagination.
