"Books are a uniquely portable magic". Many of my students have not had the chance to experience this, and I want to introduce them to how much a good book can change your life. Through class novel studies, students can also work on reading comprehension and fluency in a comfortable group setting.
I have a fabulous group of fifth graders (3 classes = about 78 fifth graders!).
They are amazing and teach me so much every day. There is not a single day that goes by that these kids do not make me smile and/or laugh.
Unfortunately, like most kids, some of them see reading as a chore. Many of them have not been introduced to that book that will change their life and stick with them forever. I want to help them find that book.
My Project
These resources will help me accomplish a number of things in my classroom.
The book "Because of Mr. Terupt" will be a perfect way to start the school year. Not only will it help me introduce essential skills such as character sketches and using quotes from the text to support those sketches, but in reading the book students will start to realize that everyone has a different life situation and we do not necessarily know everything about that situation.
The City of Ember is a fabulous book that will show the students how being greedy and selfish can affect the people around you, and also how to rise above your current situation. The main characters in this book are approximately the same age as my students, so that will help to inspire them. There are several unanswered questions in this book (it is the first of a series), so that leaves it open to working on the skill of inference throughout the entire story.
Not only do these two books help to teach important reading skills, they also show important life lessons.
These kids deserve to find books that will inspire them and change their lives.
