This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse group of children who are inquisitive, passionate about learning, and motivated to succeed. They come to school every day excited about learning. They are also very proud of their accomplishments.

I teach in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in San Diego.

One hundred percent of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students are English language learners. However, they make great progress every year. Every spring, my school has a heart-warming celebration to honor those children who have become fluent English speakers. Parents decorate the auditorium, students give moving speeches, prominent people of San Diego say some motivating words, and there is never a dry eye in the audience.

My Project

We have just begun a fourth grade edible garden. These books will help to inspire and teach more gardening and nature concepts. There are several picture books about growing gardens in urban environments. There are also books with beautiful illustrations about gardens, trees, seasons and more. I hope to use these books to support our school garden, and for art and writing projects too.

I plan to use these books as a spring board to having my students explore nature around our school and neighborhood.

I work in an inner city school that is mostly concrete, and I am trying to bring more nature into my school and students lives.
