At our high school, kids come from varied backgrounds across many ethnicities and experiences. With over 50% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch, they don't all have a lot at home; however, they are caring, compassionate, and motivated (when they want to be). They are typical, fickle teenagers who are distracted by drama, the latest Netflix craze, and their cell phones.
My students LOVE to read - okay, they don't all love to read.
But they COULD love to read, if circumstances were right and books were available and teachers knew how to encourage kids to develop a reading life.
Having collections of awesome books to share with students is vital to the mission of creating lifelong readers. The number one obstacle that holds kids back from reading is simply access - having high-interest books available to them (lots of high-interest books).
By donating to our project, you will help create a book flood in our room that gets kids reading and keeps kids reading, long after high school ends.
Finding the right "fit" book is so many times the catalyst to jump start engagement with reading. And there is no age at which it is ever too late. Reading changes lives!
