This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are absolutely obsessed with R.L. Stine books. The problem, however, is that we don't have enough books to go around. My students want to read, but are often disappointed to find out that all the Fear Street or Goosebumps books are checked out and they will have to wait.
I teach seventh grade language arts at an urban school in Missouri.
Unfortunately, our school has fallen on hard times and does not have the funding available to order books for our students. Additionally, we are located in a high needs community that does not have the means of equipping our students with the materials necessary to meet student needs. Many of my students entered seventh grade reading several years below grade level. However, their hard work is beginning to pay off as their reading levels are gradually improving.
My Project
Since most of my students read several years below grade level, our goal is to improve our reading scores by two years. Everyone has heard the saying practice makes perfect. The same is true of reading. In order to become a better reader, students need to practice reading. Since my students are already struggling readers, it is important to keep them engaged with high interest reading material. If my students are interested in the books then their experience with literature will be a positive experience and they will likely become life long readers. R.L. Stine books are exactly what my students need in order to become hooked on reading for life.
With your help my students will be able to discover at reading can actually be enjoyable.
Your donation will provide my students with the resources they desperately need in order to be successful this year. With your help we can close the achievement gap for these students.
