I am an eighth-grade special education teacher in Brooklyn, New York. I have been working very hard with my students on improving their reading skills. Many of my students began the school year reading at a second-grade reading level, but some have already moved all the way up to fifth-grade level! I cannot express to you how proud I am of their hard work and persistence. One of the challenges I've faced is finding books that are written on lower reading levels, but feature content appropriate for 13-year-old students. It is frustrating for students to feel as though they are reading "children's books" when they are entering their teenage years. I have found a series of books that truly engage my students in independent reading. They are called "Orca Soundings," and they are teen fiction written on lower reading levels. These books are about current issues and relevant subjects for teens and young adults. Relationships, sports, music, and family issues are all experiences my students can relate to. These books feature protagonists faced with challenges such as peer pressure, and offer constructive and positive ways to deal with potentially negative situations. Please help our class library by contributing a series of twelve "Orca Soundings" to our classroom! Thank you!
