This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm starting an after school poetry club and my students want books that reflect and connect to their own lives. The poems in Nate Marshall's "Finna' and Jose Olivarez's "Citizen Illegal" do just that. Students will see themselves in the lyrical poems on the page and then be able to express their own poetic stories.

It's also important to me that the students in my club and in my English classes read contemporary poets--poets who are alive and making poetry in our own time.

Both of these collections will be invaluable resources for my students' mental health and poetic expression.
