Help me give my students a non-fiction collection that is current and diverse-that not only inspires them, but also mirrors and reflects their lives while opening doors to new experiences and information.

My Students
My students are caring, curious and creative! In order to encourage these traits to blossom, they need up-to-date books, materials, and technology to help them engage in the world around them. There is also a great need to enhance learning through hands-on learning materials that encourage cooperative learning, self-expression, and problem-solving. My elementary students deserve a 21st century library space, with books, materials, technology, and cooperative learning spaces that meet the needs of all learners.
My students are avid readers and need access to more current titles, both in fiction and non-fiction.
The biggest challenge is making the most of our small library space to accommodate all grade levels from First to Fifth, as well as create a welcoming and engaging space for all to enjoy and be inspired by books that reflect their worlds and the lives of those around them. My goal is to provide my students the tools to seek information that connects them better to the global community and develop research skills.
My Project
Last Summer, I completed weeding out all of the outdated books from our collection of non-fiction books. The list of books that needed updating and replacing afterwards was incredibly lengthy and with each day my students go without current texts to check out and explore in a variety of informational topics. The collection currently lacks diversity in a variety of areas; particularly in representing women and people of color in areas of science, technology, and the arts.
My students need a wider selection so that they may see themselves reflected in the people they research and read about, as well as have books that open doors for them to experience the inspirational lives of those from around the world.
Our major areas of need are STEM/STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math), compelling biographies, diverse re-tellings of traditional fairy and folk tales, multi-cultural holidays and celebrations, geography, and global citizenship.
