Help me give my students some of the most exciting new titles that reflect the proud diversity of our community: Refugee, The Poet X, Long Way Down, I'll Give You the Sun, and The Hate U Give.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a large diverse public high school in a big city. We are part of a STEMM (Science Technology Engineering Math Medicine) magnet. English Language Arts is a place where students can explore how the arts intersect with all that science. In our classrooms, they have the opportunity to be surrounded by many different people with unique stories.
My students are intelligent, inquisitive, and enthusiastic about their studies.
They get excited when we use project-based learning to deepen connections between literature, current events, history, and STEMM-related issues. They care deeply about the future they are charged with shaping, and I am continually impressed with how eager they are to learn about ways to improve our world.
My Project
My students have so much excitement when we do lightning "book pitches" and send them home with great reads. We would love to have some of the newest, most compelling, most relevant titles to infuse new life into our classroom library. Titles like "The Hate U Give," "Long Way Down," "Allegedly," "Amina's Voice," and "I'll Give You the Sun" unite our diverse classroom through thought-provoking stories.
Our goal is to grow lifelong readers and writers, and one way to do that is to have a range of exciting books to check out.
These titles make students want to unplug from technological distractions and drop into the struggle and beauty of other lives. Nothing builds compassion, attentiveness, and critical thinking like a great book.
