My Students

Do you remember having someone read you a book and then creating your own story to go with it? This is one of the activities my preschool students do with their new Tools of the Mind Curriculum. The trouble is, we do not have any repeating books to complete this activity.

My preschool students are some of the most precious children you will ever meet in your life and most have overcome more hardship in their four years of life then many do in a lifetime.

My students attend an elementary school in one of the roughest and toughest schools in DC and the majority come from a single parent home. The school they attend is still an open space school. This means there are no walls or doors to their classroom. They are separated from the other rooms by cabinets, partitions, and anything else that can be found.

My Project

For the first time in years, I have an appropriate curriculum to use with my preschoolers. It is called Tools of the Mind and it teaches them self-regulation through academic activities. These books will allow us to complete one of the literacy activities in the curriculum. It is called story extensions. With story extensions they will listen to the simple repeating story and then write their own page to insert in the book. Through this activity they are not only learning to read but they are learning to write.

They are our youngest learners and the future of our country. With these books, I can instill a live long love of reading in them while enhancing their literacy skills.
